Point Cloud Rock N Roll

Last week I featured a number of beautiful videos made with LiDAR and point clouds. I implied that a lot of the videos looked the same, and achieved a similar sad, lonely feel. I was hoping I’d find a wider range of creative applications for LiDAR in the music video world.

Ask and you shall receive.

In the comment section, reader Jason Larson mentioned that he had once worked on a video for The Strokes that was built around an ambitious LiDAR effect. “We did a few scans for them a few years ago at a number of sites around NYC,” he wrote. “A VFX company then animated the point cloud to bounce to the music. It was a really cool concept that they couldn’t quite pull off at the time, but still ended up with a cool effect.”

He’s right—the video is trippy. The Strokes, who are duplicated around the frame, also look like they’re surrounded by a laser show. Put it on full screen, crank up the volume, and enjoy.
