Substation software platform design substations ‘at least’ 30% faster

Bentley Systems, Inc. said Tuesday American Electric Power (AEP), one of the largest U.S. electric utilities, delivering electricity to more than 5.3 million customers in 11 states, has purchased access to the Bentley Substation software platform for more than 100 employees in AEP’s transmission and engineering group.

Exton, Pa.-based Bentley is a developer and marketer of 3D design and infrastructure software platforms and applications. Bentley Substation software for electrical and physical substation design allows project teams to design substations “at least” 30 percent faster, while also reducing errors and minimizing rework, the company said.

Substation combines 3D modeling, electrical design functionality, and automatic bills of materials and report generation for faster design cycles and improved collaboration across physical and electrical design disciplines.

AEP also owns the largest U.S. electricity transmission system – a 40,000-mile network that includes more 765 kilovolt extra-high voltage transmission lines than all other U.S. transmission systems combined. AEP said it also plans to let its primary outsourced engineering contractors use Substation.

Substation can be complemented with other Bentley design, simulation, collaboration, and asset performance management software to reduce operating costs of electric substations.
